Health and Safety Policy for The Hyde Carpet Cleaners
The Hyde Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our carpet, upholstery and related cleaning services. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks and forms an integral part of our day-to-day operations.
Our Health and Safety Commitments
We aim to prevent injury, ill health and accidents arising from our work activities. To achieve this, we commit to identifying, assessing and controlling risks associated with cleaning equipment, chemicals, manual handling and on-site activities. We will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards applicable to cleaning operations.
Management will provide appropriate resources, information, training and supervision to enable staff to carry out their duties safely and competently. Each employee is expected to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company’s management, who will ensure that safe systems of work are in place, maintained and regularly reviewed. Supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy on a day-to-day basis, monitoring on-site conditions, and addressing any issues that arise during cleaning tasks.
Employees are required to follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, report hazards and near misses, and refrain from working in an unsafe manner. Where work is carried out on customer premises, our staff will cooperate with any site-specific safety rules and instructions provided by the client.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We will conduct and maintain suitable and sufficient risk assessments for our cleaning activities, equipment and chemicals. These assessments will identify significant hazards, evaluate who may be harmed and how, and set out control measures to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Safe systems of work will be implemented for tasks such as carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, stain removal, use of powered machinery, and work in occupied homes and commercial properties. These systems will consider power supply safety, trailing cables, slips and trips, noise, ventilation, and interaction with occupants and the public.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
The cleaning solutions and treatments used by The Hyde Carpet Cleaners will be selected and handled with care to minimise risk to people, pets and property. Safety data information and appropriate assessments will be obtained and followed for all substances used in the cleaning process.
Chemicals will be correctly labelled, stored securely, and used only as directed. Staff will be trained in dilution, application, safe contact times, ventilation requirements, and emergency procedures in case of spills, splashes or accidental exposure. Where necessary, areas will be clearly indicated and kept clear while treatments are in progress or drying.
Personal Protective Equipment
Suitable personal protective equipment will be provided whenever hazards cannot be fully controlled by other means. This may include gloves, eye protection, masks, knee pads or protective footwear. Employees must use the equipment provided, keep it in good condition and report any defects or loss immediately so that replacements can be arranged.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
The Hyde Carpet Cleaners recognises the risks associated with lifting, moving and operating cleaning machinery and accessories. Staff will receive guidance on correct manual handling techniques to reduce the likelihood of strains, sprains and other musculoskeletal injuries.
All machinery and equipment, including carpet cleaning machines, vacuum units, hoses and accessories, will be regularly inspected and maintained in safe working order. Electrical equipment will be checked for damage, and any defect will be reported and taken out of use until repaired or replaced by a competent person.
Working on Client Premises
When operating in residential or commercial environments, our teams will take all reasonable steps to protect occupants, visitors and the general public from risk. This includes managing cables and hoses to avoid trip hazards, positioning equipment safely, and restricting access to work areas where required.
We will take care to protect furnishings, fixtures and surfaces, and to ensure that moisture, cleaning solutions and equipment do not create slip hazards. On completion of work, we will leave areas tidy, remove equipment and waste, and provide guidance on drying times and any temporary restrictions on use of the cleaned areas.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents and near misses arising from our work will be reported promptly to management and recorded. We will investigate these events, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence where reasonably practicable.
Employees will be informed of emergency procedures relevant to the sites on which they work, including fire evacuation routes and assembly points where applicable. When incidents occur, the safety of people will always take priority over property or schedules.
Training, Information and Supervision
We will provide appropriate induction and ongoing training so that employees understand the risks associated with carpet and upholstery cleaning, and know how to work safely. This includes instruction on safe operation of machinery, correct use of chemicals, personal protective equipment, manual handling techniques and site-specific arrangements.
Supervision will be proportionate to the risks of the work and the experience of individual staff members. Managers and supervisors will monitor compliance with this policy and address unsafe practices promptly.
Health, Welfare and Wellbeing
The Hyde Carpet Cleaners is committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of its workforce. We will aim to minimise exposure to noise, dust, vapours and other potential irritants through the use of appropriate equipment, ventilation and working methods. Reasonable steps will be taken to avoid excessive working hours and to provide adequate breaks, especially during physically demanding tasks.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This health and safety policy will be monitored on an ongoing basis and formally reviewed at regular intervals, or following significant changes in our operations, equipment or legal requirements. Lessons learned from incidents, feedback from clients and employees, and developments in cleaning methods or technology will be considered as part of our commitment to continual improvement.
By working together and following the principles and practices set out in this policy, The Hyde Carpet Cleaners aims to deliver high-quality cleaning services while maintaining a safe and healthy environment for everyone involved.
